Bronfen, H. Ulrich Obrist and P. Phelan, PIPILOTTi RIST, LONDON, 2001, pp. 98-99 (installation view and film still) All of Pipilotti Rist's artistic endeavors are imbued with the spirit of experimentation. From projects that push technical and conceptual limitations of video to her inventive installations that alter or visually dissolve their architectural surrounds, Rist's projects-she refers to them as "visual research experiments"-reflect her lively intellect and her faith in the unexpected results that come via collaboration and cross-disciplinary interaction. This open-ended approach to art making results in projects without defined borders; footage is often recycled and artworks constantly evolve. As art historian Peggy Phelan notes: "Ironically, in a medium known for its endless ability to be perfectly reproduced, the video art of Pipilotti Rist remains fundamentally variable. In this, she retains her allegiance to the radical, ephemeral nature of performance." (E. Bronten, H. Ulrich and P. Phelan, PIPILOTTI RIST, London, 2001, p. 72.) Such is the case with My Boy, My Horse, My Dog, 1997, a video and slide projection work that derives from her complex performance/video installation of the same year entitled Shooting Divas. For the initial project, ten singers publicly performed their interpretations of love songs written by Rist and longtime collaborator Anders Guggisberg. Footage from these performances was then mixed on-site at the museum by Rist and her staff in an interactive open-studio environment. In My Boy, My Horse, My Dog, a video projection of Turkish singer Saadet Türköz's mesmerizing rendition of a bluesy, romantic song is overlaid with a projected-slide sequence of production stills that chronicle the Shooting Divas performance and initial installation. The conceptual layers of Rist's undertaking are echoed in these visual tiers of information, which, when experienced, effectively suspend the viewer between the dreamy atmosphere of a love song and the mechanics of its creation.
