***Auction Highlight*** 1838 Pattern Half Dollar 50c Judd-73, P-77, R7 50c Graded Choice Proof By USCG. Up for auction is a nicely toned Pattern Coin, it's the 1838 Half Dollar, Judd-73 Original, Pollock-77, R.7, in pr64. The obverse depicts a draped bust of Liberty facing left with thirteen stars around the periphery and the date below. Liberty is wearing a diadem and the scroll over her hair is inscribed with LIBERTY. A flying eagle facing left dominates the reverse. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination HALF DOLLAR are around the periphery. Struck in silver with a Reeded edge, metallic alignment of the dies. Judd-73 is an 1838-dated Pattern for a Half Dollar. The obverse was designed by William Kneass; the reverse by Christian Gobrecht after Titian Peale. This Judd number was struck as an Original in 1838, then rest ruck repeatedly from the early 1850s to the 1870s. At some point, the reverse cracked, and the cracks became more severe and more extensive as additional coins were struck. According to pattern researcher Saul Teichman, no Judd-73 is known without cracked dies. If you will notice our example has minimal die cracks. All of the 10 or so known “Original” examples” have at least 3 die breaks on the reverse and the restrikes have many and very deep breaks. This most certainly is an “original” 1838 strike and an early one at that! I have included a PCGS certified example listed as “Original” that example has 3 cracks on the reverse. A later strike than ours. A Corey's Pick, Bid to Win, Don't let it get Away, you might not find its equal Coin. I give this coin my highest recommendation
