Prohibition Laws in the 1900's Typed Manuscript
Prohibition Laws in the 1900's Typed Manuscript Excellent content lot consisting of a typed manuscript, 11pp., March 12, 1900, titled "A Comparison of the Liquor Laws of Various States", by William Guest Underwood; and four letters received by Underwood in response to inquiries made in preparation for his essay. Most notably included is a 4pp. letter from John N. Parker, Chairman of the Prohibition Party of Maryland, on Party letterhead, Oct. 5, 1899. He writes, in part: "...I have to say nearly half of the territory of the state is under local option laws, but they are poorly enforced and much liquor is sold in all the local option counties or sold & delivered to those counties. In my opinion a county is much better with than without the law even if but poorly enforced. But I would not say local option is the best solution of the liquor question. It is too 'local' & too 'optional' - the next legislature can change the option as has been done in several instances and let in the saloons again. Cecil County has had that experience several times. I am sure the best solution of the liquor question is Prohibition , State & National with a party behind it to enforce the law after it is made. I have worked along this line for 115 years and every additional year but reinforces that opinion...A few weeks ago I visited the Dispensary at Greensboro, N.C. the only one in Guilford Co. From what I saw and heard I am sure a great improvement to the people of the town has resulted in substituting the one dispensary for the nine barrooms. But that is only a 'stepping stone' towards prohibition which the people are after..." Overall, interesting content and worthy of further research. Usual folds and some soiling to pages, good.

Shipping: Small Flat (view shipping information)
