Dalzell/Private Dalzell"</B></I> <B>twice,</B></I> once at the beginning and again at the conclusion, 2p (conjoined), 8.5" x 14". Headed by him: <I>"'The Blue and Gray' of 1867/As revised May 30, 1916 by author of both".</B></I> May 30th was Decoration Day (now, Memorial Day) which was first celebrated in 1868 to honor Civil War soldiers by decorating their graves. The third stanza: <I>"Let minute guns today intone/The Nation's common loss,/And North and South forever one/Beneath our Savior's Cross:-/United now from sea to sea,/Forever and a day-/O brothers let us ever be/At peace, like Blue and Gray!"</B></I>James M. Dalzell, a private in the 116th Ohio Volunteer Infantry and a member of the Ohio state legislature (1876-1879), was best known to the public as "Private Dalzell" for his patriotic speeches and writings under that name as well as his organization of many soldiers' reunions. In addition to his signature, he has penned the following at the conclusion of the poem: <I>"Published first in/Washington D.C. 1867/and republished,/Soldiers' Home, O. 1916."</B></I> Folds, otherwise in fine condition.
