Printed Materials/Newspapers: Trial of a Slave Pirate at Philadelphia
May 4, 1855, THE DAILY UNION, Published by Thomas J. Keenan & Co., Pittsburgh, PA, Choice Extremely Fine. Vol. III, No. 308, 25" x 18.5", 4 pages, 7-column layout. Very little wear, a few stains, and light toning. Nice masthead and graphics in this pre-Civil War paper. Page 2 has an article about the "Trial of a Slave Pirate at Philadelphia," which recounts how the defendant, "James G. Damond," was charged with 40 counts of attempting to transport to Cuba some 600 Africans as slaves--against U.S. law, which, by the 1830s, had outlawed the importation of slaves. Other highlights include nicely illustrated advertisements, news from around the country and around the world.
