Printed Materials/Newspapers: Last Loyalist Newspaper
November 30, 1782, THE ROYAL GAZETTE, New York, Extremely Fine. 18" x 12", 4 pages. Masthead of the British coat of arms. Although published in New York, the paper ignores, for the most part, the revolution going on, and devotes most of its attention to other British military conflicts, such as the siege of Gibraltar. Page 3 does note that "The language of Government runs highly in favour of the Loyalists, and their patron, Governor [William] Franklin has been very agreeable received in the Royal closet...a noble Lord...declared he never would accede to the dismembering any part of the British empire....Respecting the leaving of posts in America, you will find that Charlestown will be the last devoted to that fate." This would be the last Loyalist newspaper title.
