Printed Materials/Newspapers: Illegally Transporting Some 600 Africans
May 5, 1855, THE DAILY UNION, Published by Thomas J. Keenan & Co., Pittsburgh, PA, Choice Extremely Fine. Vol. III, No. 309, 25" x 18.5", 4 pages, 7-column layout. Very light toning, and a few stains. Tape repairs to bottom left portion of front page. Nice masthead and graphics in this pre-Civil War paper. Page 2 has some gripping testimony against "James G. Darnand", an American charged with illegally transporting some 600 Africans to Cuba for the purpose of selling them into slavery. This is day 2 of the trial coverage, and includes some intriguing details about how the Africans were crowded into 2-foot-high shelves below decks, how many died, and how the captain managed to elude other ships prior to landing in Cuba.
