Printed Materials/Newspapers: Death of Captain Cook in Owyhee
June 23, 1827, SALEM LITERARY & COMMERCIAL OBSERVER, Published by W. & S.B. Ives, Salem, MA, Very Fine. Vol. V. No. 25, 20.25" x 14.25", 6-column layout, 4 pages. Light brown toned paper with minor foxing, absences along bottom edge, wear to edges, and a tape repair to front page. Print is generally sharp. Fabulous descriptions on the front page of "heroism" in the Sandwich Islands, in which the female Hawaiian chief Kaiolani, who had converted to Christianity, descends into a volcanic crater in order to prove that there were no "gods" there. Page 2 has a story on "Piracy and Murder" off the coast of Virginia, as well as accounts of the death of Captain Cook in "Owyhee," and a news brief on Beethoven, who had recently died "in great distress," without realizing that he owned stock valued at 1000 pounds sterling in the Bank of Vienna with which he could have improved his impoverished life. Page 4 has wonderful advertisements and woodcut graphics. Superb content!
