Jodhpur, silver rupee in the name of Ahmad Shah Bahadur, RY4, Garh Jodhpur mint, Lingen M&J J.01.01, 11.34g.

Extremely fine, Very rare.

This is the earliest issue of Jodhpur as a princely state and most likely issued by Maharaja Bakht Singh, who rose in revolt against his nephew Ram Singh the son and successor of Abhai Singh after his death on 17 June 1749. Bakht Singh won over Ram Singh's partisans at the battle of Luniawas and became the Maharaja of Marwar and Jodhpur in July 1751. The AH/RY combination on the coin suggests it was struck between March and November 1751 and this matches closely with the developments leading to Bakht Singh's usurpation. His reign suddenly ended when he died of suspected poisoning on 21 September 1752.
