Hyderabad?, silver 1/4th rupee of a highly unusual and previously unknown type, struck in the name of Shah Alam II and dated AH1216, with a neat 'leaf' symbol on the reverse, 2.77g.

Extremely fine, Extremely rare.

Most likely a 'chulnee' or privately contracted issue from an unknown mint in the Hyderabad Nizam's territories. The political situation in Hyderabad around this time was extremely volatile with Nizam Ali Khan's recent death and the accession of Sikandar Jah, an ineffectual ruler. Many privately contracted mints were allowed to operate at this time to raise revenues for the government, which was quickly sliding into bankruptcy.
