Dungarpur, gold nazarana mohur dated VS1926 (1869 AD), 10.88g, struck in the reign of Maharaval Udai Singh II, hitherto unreported, the earliest instance of a gold issue by Dungarpur state. Obv: Legend Sarkar / Garapara in a circle. Rev: VS date in Gujarati numerals, a dagger pointing to right and a sprig/branch.

Extremely fine, Unique so far

Maharaval Udai Singh II was a modernizing figure in the history of Dungarpur. During his reign, soon after the Great Revolt of 1857-59, a copper coinage was initiated at Dungarpur which was struck from local copper ore sources. The design of this gold coin draws considerably on that of the copper issues, in particular the truncated legend 'Garapara' instead of 'Dungarpur'. Like most other princely state gold coins struck in the latter half of 19th century, this must have been a ceremonial issue.
