Jai Singh Khichi, Silver Rupee, 10.75g, Jaynagar Mint, in the name of Muhammad Akbar II, Obv: Devanagari legend “Yah Sikka Par Chhap Sri Aakabar Badshah ki Janag (for Jainagar)”, Rev: Devanagari legend “Sri Raghava Paratapa Pavana Putra Bal Payake”, conch shell at 1 o’clock (KM# 9A). About extremely fine, exceedingly rare.
The Khichis of Raghogarh were arch enemies of the Sindhias. Jai Singh Khichi’s father was drawn away from Raghogarh by Mahadaji Sindhia. Jai Singh subsequently based himself at the fortress of Bajranggarh. Here he struck a interesting series of coins, with legends invoking Lord Hanuman in Devanagari legend and no mention of a Mughal emperor. However, extremely rare coins are also known in the name of Muhammad Akbar. The only other comparable instance is of Indore, when Jaswant Rao Holkar struck coins with Sanskrit legends.
