Significant handwritten manuscript for his acceptance speech at the 1988 Minnesota Music Awards, signed "'Love God,' Prince," one page both sides, 8.5 x 7, no date but circa 1988. Presented on May 12, 1988, Prince won ten awards but did not attend. Instead, he asked Revolution band members Eric Leeds, Dr. Fink, and Miko Weaver to read his message, for which this was the initial draft. The speech reads, in full: "A great deal of this award belongs to my band—Eric Leeds, Atlanta Bliss, Mico, Boni, Dr. Fink, Levi Jr, Sheila E. and Cat. Thru the use of film, they visually brought to life the songs that beforehand some thought were simply more of my quote, unquote 'experiments.' To sit & write a stinky ol', crusty ol' 3 1 1/2 minute pop song would be as boring as it is easy. But 2 try 2 capture real emotion, to try to record the actual moment of change in one's life, to finally realize the ultimate power of one's soul and to share all of these things with others is far more exciting as it is challenging. So maybe a better word 4 these songs would be expeditions. (over). Because of your love and appreciation I will continue 2 look 4 new answers and question the old." In the left margin, Prince notes the times at which "LP of the year" and "R&B Recording Band of the year" would be presented. Interestingly, someone else went through the manuscript and changed most of Prince's "2" numerals to "to," presumably to make it easier to read. In fine condition, with two horizontal folds and central vertical fold and rough bottom edge. From the collection of Prince's assistant tour manager Gwen Leeds and accompanied by a letter of provenance. Among the awards Prince received were album of the year for Sign o' the Times and top male vocalist in both the rock and rhythm and blues categories. Revealing Prince's sense of humor, musical mission, and heartfelt appreciation for his bandmates, this is an exceptional autographic piece.
