Grandson of King George III, cousin of Queen Victoria, and maternal uncle of Queen Mary (1819–1904) who served as Commander-in-Chief of the Forces from 1856 to 1895; he became Duke of Cambridge in 1850 and Field Marshal in 1862. Set of seven ALSs signed "George," fourteen pages in total, each approximately 4.5 x 7.25, five penned on Gloucester House letterhead, dated between 1858 and 1897. The earliest letter, dated June 9, 1858, in part: "I send you back the enclosed with such explanation as I can get. I never need such a production in my life & could not find any single person including the Vice President of our Board of Military Education"; another, dated July 30, 1870, in part: "I am extremely grieved that I am unable to comply with your request regarding your sons being allowed to join the French Army"; a letter to sculptor Count Gleichan Queen Victoria's nephew, dated January 4, 1881, in part: "I think it would be very satisfactory indeed if you were to have the Monument entrusted to your execution for the Artillery Officer & men who lost their lives in the recent Campaign"; and another, dated July 30, 1897, in part: "I am delighted to hear that your son has passed the Medical Examination & that he has been Gazetted to the Guardian Guards." In overall very good to fine condition, with occasional toning and old mounting remnants along the edge of one letter.
