Son of Queen Victoria who was titled Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, as well as Earl of Sussex (1850–1942). Uncommon sepia trimmed 4 x 6 cabinet photograph of Prince Arthur in the formal dress uniform of a General of the British Army, signed in ink, "Arthur, 1896." Produced by Walery, Photographers to the Queen of Regent Street, London, with the access number 38287 written to the rear, together with the company’s logo and address. Also inscribed on the rear in ink in another hand is “Arthur Duke of Connaught Presented to the Dean of Gloucester.” Displayed in a ornate metal frame with crown final, the borders of which somewhat obscure the signature. In fine condition, with trimmed edges.

Arthur was the seventh child (third son) of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. A military man, he served in the British Army for 40 years, seeing active service in much of the British Empire. Also titled the Earl of Sussex, he was made Governor General of Canada in 1911. He became Queen Victoria’s last surviving son.
