Presidential Commission. Promoting Edga
Presidential Commission. Promoting Edgar Gregory to Major General (Bvt.) for "gallant conduct in the battle of Five Forks, Virginia" (where Lee's and Pickett's plans went awry in one of the last battles of the war). With steel-stamped signature of Pres. Andrew Johnson and ink signature of Edward Stanton as Sec. of War, 1866. Johnson had a crippled right arm, making it difficult to sign all the official documents. He was the first President to make use of a reproduction of his signature. The authenticity of such documents are attested to by the fact that they were co-signed by a Cabinet member. Large handsome vellum document, 15 -3/4 x 1 9 overall, bearing blue seal in fine condition next to eagle at top, vignette of flags at bottom. Very fine.
