First Republican Presidential Candidate John C. Frémont Autograph signed "J. C. Frémont New Brighton Staten Island April 1884" on a 4.25" x 2.25" sheet. Frémont is known for several accomplishments. He led multiple surveying expeditions through the western territory of the United States in the 1830s and 1840s and then participated in the capture of California from Mexico during the Mexican-American War. A bit later, gold was discovered on his California estate and he became a multi-millionaire. In 1850, Frémont was elected to the U.S. Senate from California as a Democrat. He was a firm opponent of slavery and became one of the founders of the Republican Party, running for president in 1856 but losing to Buchanan. He served then as a Union officer in the Civil War, and then retiring from public life, he devoted himself to railroad projects in the West, losing much of his fortune in those pursuits. After serving as governor of the Arizona Territory, he moved to New York where he died in 1890. This bold and dark signature is double matted with a period engraving and framed to an overall size of 11" x 15".
