<B>President John Tyler and Secretary of State Daniel Webster Sign the Original 1841 Ratification of the Treaty of Restitution Between the United States and Peru</B></I> John Tyler ( 1790-1862) Document signed as President, 11 pages, folio, Washington, January 12, 1843. Countersigned by Daniel Webster as Secretary of State. On the last two pages are the signatures of James C. Pickett, "Charge d'affaires of the United States of America accredited to the government of Peru" and Don Manuel del Rio " Councillor of State and Chief Auditor of the Superior Tribunal of Accounts of Peru." <BR><BR> Ratification of the original agreements between the two countries to settle claims of United States citizen on the high seas. These included "<I> claims of citizen of the United States on account of seizure, captures, detention, sequestration, and confiscation of their vessel, or for the damage and destruction of them, of their cargoes, and other property at sea, and in the ports and territories of Peru...</B></I>" The sum of three hundred thousand dollars was to be paid by Peru "<I> at Lilma in ten equal annual installments of thirty thousand dollars each..</B></I>". The first installment was to be paid on January 1, 1844 but due to political wrangling on both sides was not before until the signing of this further ratification.
