<B>William McKinley Signs An Official Arbor Day Proclamation as Ohio Governor.</B></I> Original typed 1892 document, signed by McKinley and Ohio Secretary of State Daniel Ryan. Large, showy gold-foil paper official state seal attached. 8.0" x 12.5" and in very fine condition. (2 pp). This is a relic of the earliest days of the environmental conservation movement. McKinley designates April 29, 1892 as Arbor Day: <I>"Whereas, The forests of the state are rapidly disappearing to an alarming extent; therefore, resolved by the General Assembly of the State of Ohio, That the Governor be and is hereby authorized to issue a proclamation, annually, setting apart a day in April for the planting of forest trees, and recommending that the day be devoted by the people to that purpose."</B></I> Still in the original folders in which it was purchased, in 1956, from legendary autograph dealer King Hostick.
