President Lincoln Shot by an Assassin- April 15, 1865 New York Times. The full eight-page edition, published between the time Lincoln was shot and his death a few hours later. The column one headlines read, in order: "AWFUL EVENT. President Lincoln Shot by an Assassin. The Deed Done at Ford's Theatre Last Night. The Act of a Desperate Rebel. The President Still Alive at Last Accounts. No Hopes Entertained of His Recovery. Attempted Assassination of Secretary Seward. Details of the Dreadful Tragedy." Four of the six columns on the front page are filled with various reports of the event, and the entire front page is printed with mourning rules (black borders between the columns). In the modern day of up-to-the-second news transmission, it's hard to imagine how hard it was to get accurate and timely reporting in 1865. This historic newspaper is in generally very good condition, unopened at the top and untrimmed at the edge, folds with weakness, one area of foxing near the masthead. Still, a great piece for display and a particularly desirable title. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
