autographed on recto with a penciled note on verso, President Jas. A. Garfield, March 4, 1881, inauguration day. On July 2, he was shot by Charles Guiteau, and died two and a half months later of blood poisoning.

Born in Ohio in 1831, Garfield was serving in the Ohio Senate when the Civil War began. He recruited Ohio volunteers and became a Brig. General, then Major General of Volunteers. When elected to Congress in 1862, Lincoln persuaded him to resign his commission, citing that it was easier to find Major Generals than effective Republicans for Congress. He was re-elected for 18 years, until the election of 1880. He campaigned at the convention for John Sherman. On the 36th ballot, Garfield himself was chosen as the "dark horse" Republican candidate. Barely defeating Winfield Scott Hancock by only 10,000 popular votes, Garfield would serve one of the shorter Presidential terms (only slightly longer than fellow Ohioan W.H. Harrison).

Condition: Excellent.
