Choice Abraham Lincoln autograph letter signed as President. 1.5pp. letter datelined “Executive Mansion,” 20 August 1861 to “Hon. Sec. of War,” Simon Cameron. Lincoln responds to the request of a personal favor from a California Senator, in full: “Sir, / Mr. John M. Huntington calls on me this morning saying that several weeks ago I indorsed on his application to be an Assistant Quarter-Master in the Army, these words, to wit ‘Mr. Huntington is presented for the position of Assistant Quarter-Master in the Army - I herewith send letters and papers, recommending him for a different appointment, as showing his position and standing. If there be a vacancy, I think his appointment would be a very proper one.’ He also says Senator McDougal [James Alexander McDougall, Senator from California (served 1853-55 & 1861-67)], in his letter, asks the the [sic] appointment, as a personal favor to himself. If these things be found to be correctly stated, let the appointment be made. / Yours truly / A. Lincoln.'' John M. Huntington was appointed Assistant Quarter Master of Volunteers 10 days after President Lincoln's letter, on 30 August 1861. He was honorably discharged on 20 May 1864, and died on 10 October 1864. Letter in fine condition.
