Presentation Smith & Wesson .44 Target Double Action Revolver, #23680, .44 Spec. cal., 6-1/2'' barrel, blue finish, factory checkered diamond walnut grips, with lanyard loop in butt. Sideplate marked ''To V.C. McCaslin from the Citizens of El Segundo in recognition of unusual service rendered the community on April 3, 1925''. The inscription refers to an incident in which Officer McCaslin ended the career of bank and mail robber Bernard Kassel and his accomplice. Included is a copy of the newspaper ''The El Segundo Herald'', dated April 10, 1925, along with a copy of the City minutes of their meeting where they discussed the attempted robbery, and factory letter. This revolver was originally shipped March 26, 1925, and delivered to Calif. Hardware Co., Los Angeles, CA. Since this revolver was shipped before the event in the presentation, it was definitely purchased new and then later engraved. Condition is excellent as refinished, with very light frosting beneath the blue. Presentation inscription is clear with neatly added mother of pearl five-pointed star to top of right grip. Grips with moderate flattening to checks. Action is crisp, bore is very good. Est.: $2,500-$3,500. (C&R)
