Prescott,AZ - Yavapai County - c1905 - Vista of Town Photograph *Territorial* :
Crisp shot over the early Arizona town. Photograph measures 6 1/2”x4 1/2”, gray single matte 8 3/4”x7”, high to medium contrast—faded on the peripheries, and the focus is sharp. Many signs can be read on buildings, including the Prescott Hotel, The Bashford-Burmister Comp., and J. S. Calles Harness. Someone has placed a very small X over the Prescott Hotel and another unidentified structure. Prescott is located in west of I-17 between Flagstaff and Phoenix. The town was laid out along Granite Creek in 1864. Prescott was made territorial capital, but lost it to Tucson in 1876, regained it in 1877, and lost it again to Phoenix in 1889. In 1900 the town was hit by a devastating fire. They quickly rebuilt using brick and stone. This photograph was probably taken not long after the town was rebuilt.
