Pres. Wilsons Advertising Man. Georg
Pres. Wilson's "Advertising Man." George Creel, a confidante of Pres. Wilson, was the leading American propagandist during World War I. He engendered among the American people a hatred and fear of Germany and Russia. Creel supported Wilson in his antagonism toward Theodore Roosevelt. Some weeks after Roosevelt was nominated for President at the 1916 Convention, Roosevelt declined the spot, deferring to Hughes, who would be defeated by Wilson. Three T.Ls.S. from Creel to Josephus Daniels, 1916, with three carbon copies from Daniels in reply (copies unsigned), on subject of altering an article in the Herald on the Navy, to comply with Daniels' corrections. "Col. Dunlap has given a tremendous endorsement...Roosevelt is building up a vast political machine, and the campaign is going to be decided by publicity...It is going to be a battle between Truth and Lies...I have a lot of ideas on this publicity feature of the campaign...Have just finished the article on Wilson...." Filing notations, else fine.
