<B>President Theodore Roosevelt Autograph Memo Signed, Referencing Hawaii, 1/2 page, 8vo</B></I> On a simple sheet of lined paper, {Washington}, undated by Roosevelt but bearing an ink document date {in an unknown hand} of February 18, 1909. He had always taken a great interest in Hawaii, having been a strong advocate of its annexation in 1898. During the last days of his administration the president sends a private memo to his secretary of the Navy pressing for a decision in a matter he considers important. To "<I>Dear Mr. Newberry</B></I>" [Secretary of the Navy Truman Handy Newberry], requesting: "<I>Can't H.M.T. Pearce be appointed chaplain before I leave? Will you consult with the Bishop about the Honolulu matter?</B></I>" The president's term of office ended on March 3, 1909. Fine condition, partially mounted on verso.
