Pres. Johnson /Jacqueline Kennedy Archive Letter Lyndon Johnson and Jacqueline Kennedy: An Importan
Lyndon Johnson and Jacqueline Kennedy: An Important Archive of Letters Regarding Daniel Patrick Moynihan's Book. A 10pp archive containing one letter from Lyndon B. Johnson and eight letters from Jacqueline Kennedy Onasis regarding Daniel Patrick Moynihan's book on Pennsylvania Avenue. The thirty-sixth President (1963-1969), Johnson was a Congressman from Texas even during his WWII Naval service, where he won a Silver Star. He was elected Senator by 87 votes, and rose to majority leader, earning a reputation as a domineering figure and crafty legislator. Selected as Kennedy's running mate, he became President after the assasination. He signed two major civil rights laws and began the progressive Great Society Program, which include Head Start and Job Corps. He escalated the Vietnam War, leading to student protest and the "credibility gap". Declining to run in 1968, he retired to his Texas ranch where he died a few years later.

The archives contains four typed letters signed by Jackie, one typed letter signed by President Johnson and one autographed letter signed by Jackie. Five of the letters are to Daniel Patrick Moynihan and one TLS to Liz (Moynihan's wife?)

A Lyndon B. It makes me so happy to know they are in your domain-If anyone can make them materialize-it will be you. Your book on Pennsylvania Avenue also just came and I will read it with greatest interest.
