Newman, Eric P. VARIETIES OF THE FUGIO CENT. PRELIMINARY DRAFT. No place of date of issue (c. 1950-51). Original carbon copy typescript on legal-size onionskin paper. 3, 1-3, 3a, 4-7 leaves [11 total], typed on rectos only and stapled in the corner. Inscribed by Newman to Rob Retz in upper left corner of first page. Fine. A preliminary draft of Eric P. Newman's highly important work on the Fugio coppers, eventually published in the January-February 1949 issue of the Coin Collector's Journal. (and later revised and reprinted in the July-August 1952 issue). The draft appears to be fairly close to the final text, with the most striking difference being that Newman was continuing to follow Crosby's identification of the link side of the Fugio as the obverse in this draft, where he had flipped the designations by the final version. There are also some differences in die marriages. A wonderful historic typescript of a highly important work--only Newman's second published numismatic work. Ex Rob Retz library.
