Prehistoric ( 56 - 34 million years old ) Fossil Fish ( Diplomystus or Knightia ) Green River Formation, Wyoming. Three fish family, displayed together,  2 5/8" X 2 1/8" sediment block. Comes with 3 1/2" square display case.  Knightia is an extinct genus of clupeid bony fish ( herring ) that lived in the freshwater lakes and rivers of North America and Asia during the Eocene epoch. Fossils as these are formed when an animal dies in a watery environment and is buried in mud and silt. Soft tissues quickly decompose leaving the hard bones or shells behind. Over time sediment builds over the top and hardens into rock.
