Featured in this lot is this prehistoric Hopewell butterfly bannerstone circa 200 bce - 500 ce. The bannerstone shows a well carved butterfly shape bannerstone with a steep blade length with rounded shoulders and a a tubular opening in the center of the piece. Hopewell culture, notable ancient Indian culture of the east-central area of North America. It flourished from about 200 bce to 500 ce chiefly in what is now southern Ohio, with related groups in Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Pennsylvania, and New York. The condition of this of this butterfly bannerstone is good with no obvious signs of damage and in good overall condition. The measurements of this 2 1/2" x 4" x 3/4". Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection and collected by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert.
