Pre-War Parker Side-by-Side DHE Grade Shotgun, #242211, 12 ga., 26'' blue barrels with 2-3/4'' chambers and ejectors, weighing 6 lbs. 14 ozs., choked Imp. Cyl. & 3/4 choke, matte game rib with single bright bead, scroll engraved case hardened frame with hunting dogs, fine pistol-grip checkered walnut stock with Parker hard rubber pistol-grip cap, engraved skeleton buttplate, with checkered walnut butt. Dimensions: 2-7/16 in. drop at heel by 1-7/16 in. drop at comb by 14-3/8 in. length of pull. Bottom of barrels marked with serial number, Parker overload proofmarks, with left barrel marked ''Imp. Mod.'', and right barrel marked ''Imp. Cyl.''. Griffin & Howe archive letter additionally states that this shotgun was sold on Dec. 1, 1941, to L. Carlisle at a price of $196.75. The cost of the shotgun to A&F was $147.57. Griffin & Howe confirms that this information was extracted from the original Abercrombie & Fitch inventory records, Book 8, page 453, on Sept. 24, 2011. A copy of this 1941 dated manifest page is included showing this entry as the last on the page. Original owner, Mr. Lewis G. Carlisle (1914-1982), was a nephew of Allen Pinkerton, a pilot for the world-champion Los Angeles Dodgers, and a Yale graduate who excelled as a member of their rowing team in 1933. Mr. Carlisle was the son of Jay F. Carlisle, a New York stockbroker. In the 1920 census, Carlisle is shown residing with his parents, siblings, and eight live-in servants on Long Island, on East Islip, New York. There are several references to Mr. Carlisle's association with racing boats. He traveled to and from Europe frequently in the 1930s, finally settling in Teton, Wyoming, passing away there in December 1982. Shotgun is nicely fitted in a buff leather period case with the original owner's initials ''L.G.C.'' in gold to top of case. Leather marked under handle ''Abercrombie & Fitch Co./New York/Made in England''. Interior of case is lined in burgundy felt and contains two nickel-plated English made 12 ga. snap caps. Shotgun remains in excellent condition showing minor thinning to barrel assembly from light field use. Bores are bright. Frame retains 95% lightly thinning case colors with most of the losses at balance point. Stock and forend with minor marks from handling and light use, with just the lightest flattening to checks. Action remains crisp. Exterior of shotgun case with light general scuffing; interior shows minor darkening where shotgun contacts interior material. A stunning pre-war American shotgun with all the best features. Est.: $12,000-$18,000. (C&R)
