Pre-War Colt Single Action Army Revolver with Carved Ivory Stocks
This Colt Single Action Army revolver was manufactured in 1911. The revolver has a blue barrel, cylinder, trigger guard and backstrap with casehardened frame, hammer and loading gate. The revolver is fitted with two piece, ivory stocks; the right stock is decorated with a relief-carved buffalo head. The stocks are high quality pieces but not Colt factory stocks. The hammer has course bordered knurling with a slash below the knurling. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the legend: "COLT'S PT. F.A.MFG.CO.HARTFORD CT.U.S.A." in a single line. "45 COLT" is roll-stamped on the left side of the barrel. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the Colt 'three-dates/two-lines' patent markings followed by the encircled Rampant Colt trademark. The Colt 'triangle/VP' proofmark is stamped on the left front trigger guard bow and a "W" assembler's mark is stamped on the left rear bow. The inside of the loading gate is stamped with the assembly number "603". The serial number, "318137" is located on the frame, trigger guard and backstrap. All of the visible serial numbers match.

Fine. The revolver retains 50% of the original factory blue and 30% casehardened finish. The barrel has most of the blue on the top and bottom with holster wear on the muzzle, left side and ejector housing. The front sight has been filed down during period of usage. The cylinder has a silver-gray patina with blue finish in the flutes. The trigger guard and backstrap have a blue-gray patina with generous amounts of blue in protected areas. The frame and hammer have most of the original casehardened finish with silvering on the top strap, recoil shield, loading gate and hammer spur. The later production ivory grips are in excellent condition with no fading, chips or cracks; the relief carved buffalo head shows some minor handling wear but the carving remains sharp. All of the markings are sharp. The action is tight and functions well. This is a fine example of a pre-WWI Colt Single Action Army revolver with carved ivory grips.
