Pre-Victorian British marked Bronze Cannon, with 1-3/8'' dia. bore, 21'' tube length, with outside dia. at breech of 5''; trunnion dia. is 1-7/16''. Top of barrel is marked with crest ''WR'' for William Rex (William IV 1830-1837). Three period British proofmarks just forward of touch hole. Mounted on an exact copy of the original type carriage from mahogany. Consignor states that this piece was taken out of service by the British because of a hole broken out during a firing in the bottom side of barrel. The touch hole was also blown out slightly larger when the barrel was blocked during firing or as spiked (later removed) leaving a very large touch hole. (This barrel should never be fired.) Condition is visually excellent with light thinning to crest and a mellow general overall patination. Weight: 50 lbs. Est.: $4,000-$6,000. (Antique)
