Pre-Stamp Cover, 1856, Calcutta to Ladnun, sent from Calcutta, letter enclosed, dispatch cancellation in black round seal “C. A. L. | G. P. O | 6 | MY | 1856” (but differs from the one recorded by Giles; recorded one is of the year 1857), cancellation seal has dots in between “C. A. L.”, the date is recorded for black postmark in pre-date covers, addressed to Ladnun, transit postmark is in the hazy black round seal as “AGRA | 11 | MAY | 1856”, Similar Giles # Type G21, both the cancellations are Unrecorded, very good condition, Rare.

Note: From Agra, the letter was transported to Ladnun via several modes of transportation. It took more than two months for the letter to reach "Agra" from "Calcutta" (March to May). The reason for this is that the fast-moving train services had only developed up to 160 miles from Calcutta and the only means by which letters were transported to Agra was by slow-moving steam navigation on the Ganga up to Allahabad and thereafter by road couriers. In those days, daks were transported from Calcutta to Rajasthan by Agra and Kuchawan.
