Pre-Revolutionary War, British or Colonial American Carved Powder Horn
British or Colonial American carved powder horn with numerous scrimshawed images. Consignor notes state that the horn dates from around 1765. The horn is approximately 13-inches long with a carved spout and flush-fitted wooden plug. "ONE OF JACOB/OAKES HORNS" is carved in two lines in the middle of the horn above the British Royal Cypher with "Grown/GR" below the cypher is the legend "O HAVE MERCY ON ME". The base of the horn is carved with a single-mated ship flying Union Jack, a huntsman with a horn and hounds chasing a stag. The center of the horn is carved with a man, possibly nude, approaching a woman in a gown with outstretched arms. Behind the woman is a building, possibly a fortification and a soldier with trumpet and musket. The horn shows heavy period wear and some of the images are faint. This is a very interesting 19th Century British or Colonial American hand carved powder horn.
