Very interesting ancient Mayan Cylinder most likely from Guatemala, dating to the Late Classic Period - circa 550 to 850 A.D. Redware with straight walls, decorated with three grooved ridges at rim, band of impressed heads of three Quetzalcoatl gods -- "quetzal-bird serpent," another band of ridges, all on a slant and finally a band of chevron designs. 8-1/4"H, broken/repaired from about a dozen pieces with small areas of restoration to body, but appears good to excellent. Ex-private AZ collection acquired between 1960 and 1970. An attractive vessel - and a great value!
