<td width="100%">
Ancient mold from El Salvador, dating between 300 - 800 A.D. Such a mold would have been used in fabrication of small terracotta sculptures and rattles. Pressed into the wet clay, the intricately carved pattern of the mold could be replicated, creating objects of both everyday use and for special "religious" ceremonies. Highly-detailed pattern of interior belies the soft curves of the abstract exterior. This particular mold was used to create pottery rattles in human form. Elaborate headdress and deeply recessed nose, almond-shaped eyes and beaded necklace of this individual are immediately visible in the negative image of the mold. 9-3/4"H x 6-1/4"W, intact/excellent with one area of chipping to exterior and one stabilized pressure crack visible on exterior. While employed by Maya artisans to create fabulous examples of art, this piece now has become the art! Ex-private AZ collection.
