A very nice example of the ancient brownware pottery produced in Guatemala during the Classic Period -- circa 450 to 500 A.D. Squat cylinder with slightly flaring walls at rim, decorated with deep-brown burnished finish on which two large panels have been carved with the feared Mayan God Kukulcan -- half bird, half serpent -- with large, toothy smile and piercing eyes. Panels finished with applied cinnabar, inner rim showing signs of original stucco in deep red. 5-3/4"H x 5-1/2"D, in excellent condition having been repaired from four or five pieces (no new clay). Ex-private AZ Collection acquired at major auction. A fine example!
