Pre Columbian Maya Large Footed Plate
A large Maya plate, Ca. 600 - 900 A.D. This large Maya polychrome plate measures about 13" across, and is of the type often referred to as a Maya "dancer" plate. It features a finely rendered standing figure holding a heavily decorated spear before him and a plumed rattle behind him. He is wearing a fine, elaborate headdress with and is heavily adorned with streaming cloth or plumage. Interestingly, they are shown with what appears to be sacrificial paper wrapped around their ankles (a known location from where blood would be let during auto-sacrificial rituals), which supports the conclusion that this figure is engaged in a ceremonial and/or ritual dance. The readable glyphs around the rim are of the very finest rendering, and would have been painted by a literate, significantly accomplished scribe. The glyphs are absolutely untouched and remain bold, completely in original, unrestored condition. Rattles in the legs. There is a central "kill" hole in the middle of the plate. Ample root marks, mineral deposits and staining confirm the age and authenticity of this above average example.
