An auction highlight!! Large Maya Cache vessel, Ca. 600 - 800 A.D. - The vessels body is adorned with the face of the solar deity, recognizable by the spirals in his eyes. The lower part of his face is ringed with discs, probably representing jade. His extended tongue touches the ring. Th lid is surmounted by the head of another deity, wearing a headdress in the shape of a bird. Curled devices, probably fish barbells extend from the corner of his mouth, possibly identifying him as the deity known as G1. Four loops on the top and bottom allow lid and body to be tied together. 16-1/4" tall by 10-1/4" wide. A rare and wonderful find. Published piece.
