This is an exceptional and important authentic Prairie Region Gunstock War Club from the Ex Crissman-Francis collection. The excellent piece is most likely Osage or Pawnee Native American Indian, and dates to circa 1890-1910. The war club shows a nice high relief carved wood gunstock haft with circular trade tin insert, brass tacks and forged notch-cut spontoon blade. The piece has nice patina with traces of old blue paint. The relic has been pictured in the 2009 publication/book "The Mark Francis Collection of American Indian Art" page 133 figure 207. The war club features a Revolutionary War (1775-1783) Colonial American Spontoon style notched blade original to the piece with a wood gunstock haft (the hand forged spike head was used during the Revolutionary War by the Americans in trench defense against charging British infantry or cavalry). Provenance: From the personal collection of renowned collector and foremost expert on war clubs and tomahawks, Mark Francis. The piece is from both the Crissman and Francis collection and has been authenticated and published. Truly a museum quality important piece of Osage and Pawnee history. The war club measures 8.25" x 26.75".
