Pow-Wow: A Gathering of the Tribes Event Poster
Human Be-In "Pow-Wow: A Gathering of the Tribes" Event Poster (1967). This is the event that eventually led to the Summer of Love in San Francisco. Gathered for a peaceful, blissed-out day of poetry, speeches, flowers, and music from all the major Rock bands of the time, including Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, and more, some 50,000 young people grooved the day away at the Polo Grounds, in Golden Gate Park. The January 14th, 1967 event was organized by the Diggers, a radical collective of improv actors who provided free food every day at the park for those who had nothing. Beat poets (like Allen Ginsberg and Lawrence Ferlinghetti), actors, writers, comedian Dick Gregory, and LSD gurus Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert urged the crowd to "Tune in, turn on, and drop out" and the Hippie Nation was born. This lovely poster, featuring a Rick Griffin design, is a first printing, in black on buff uncoated stock, and is in VF condition. It measures approximately 14.25" x 20".
