Edgar Degas
Ballet Dancer Adjusting her Costume
1875-76
Pencil and chalk on paper
Bequest of John S. Newberry
The Detroit Institute of Arts

This poster was printed to commemorate the Detroit Institute of Art?s centennial celebration as part of a collection of 100 Masterworks by famous artists. This one is a sketch by Edgar Degas, who is most well known for his studies of dancers. ?Ballet Dancer Adjusting Her Costume? shows just that, and follows the Degas tradition of observing dancers outside of performance; Degas was more interested in capturing the behind-the-scenes aspect of dance in 19th century Paris. This piece uses graphite pencil to draw the figure of the girl. White chalk brings out the highlights of the girl and gives the piece dimension. This is a wonderful poster that captures the spirit of Degas and his Dancers, as well as his fine sketching techniques. It would be a lovely piece for any lover of the Ballet. The dimensions of this poster are 23 x 36.75 inches.
