A collection of 8 postcards with illustrations of people wearing real cloth clothing, c1907-9. Seven are used with postmarks & stamps, 1 unused. All different, 2 similar signed by artist Arthur Thiele, 2 signed by F. Earle Christy.
Arthur Thiele (1860-1936), was a painter, illustrator, draftsman, postcard designer, & watercolorist. The postcard played a major role in Thiele's work. Among other subjects, he specialized in humanized animals, especially dachshunds & cats, & among fellow illustrators he was known as 'Dachshund-Thiele' or 'Katzen-Thiele'.
F. Earl Christy was born in Philadelphia, Penn., in 1882. At 17, he painted originals for the Boardwalk Atlantic City Picture company, with many of his early works published by the J. Hoover & Sons Calendar Company of Philadelphia. Christy attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Arts from 1905-1907. He produced dozens of magazine covers & created illustrations for many calendar prints, ink blotters, postcards & Princess Pat Cosmetic's advertisements. He passed away on Long Island, N.Y., in 1961.
