This is an excellent example of an late production Model 1896 "Bolo" Broomhandle Mauser pistol. This pistol was developed around 1915 and is called a Bolo because of it's distinctive shape of smaller dimension pistol grip, as compared to the standard 1896 Mauser pistols. These were widely sold through Europe and in the U.S. with serial numbers found up in the 600,000 range. The top of the barrel extension is marked "WAFFENFABRIK,/ MAUSER,/ OBERNDORF A/N, the left side with a "crown / U" proof and the rear milled panel on the right side of the frame is marked "WAFFENFABRIK MAUSER / OBERNDORF A. NECKAR". The "crown/U" proof is also marked on top of the bolt handle. The breech end underside of the barrel is marked with various letters and the front strap is marked "IF 6644"". It has a NS marked hammer, blue finish with fire blue trigger, safety lever, extractor and rear sight bar. Lanyard ring on the butt and all matching visible numbers. This version has the short four inch barrel with the banded front sight with the military style tangent rear sight graduated from 50-1000 meters. It is correctly fitted with a set of original Bolo style 22 groove grips that are correctly numbered on the inside of each panel. Complete with a correct wooden shoulder stock marked "721" on the attaching iron and stamped with the Mauser banner.
