Possibly the most important American Revolutionary War official Navy document ever sold at public auction. This document details the proceedings of Court Martial May 6, 1776 requested by American Captain Abraham Whipple which describes the battle action where he commanded the American frigate Columbus which engaged The Glascow on April 6, 1776, and is considered the first naval battle of the American Revolution. Thedocument is addressed to Eseck. Hopkins, Commander-in-Chief of the American fleet and titled on front “Captain A. Whipple’s trial”. We believe this to be Hopkins’ copy of the official record retained by him as the Commander-in-Chief of the Marine Committee of the Continental Congress who headed all U.S. Naval forces. The document shows original signatures by (1) Dudley Saltonstall. He was 2nd in command to Hopkins and also commander of the ship “Alfred” which participated in the battle. (2) Nicholas Biddle, one of the first four captains of the U.S. Navy. He commanded the “Randolph”
