1850 Edward E. Dunbar arrived in San Francisco February 28, 1849. He became a commission merchant and auctioneer. By Sept. 1850 he opened Dunbars California Bank buying and selling gold dust including insured exchange. He obtained coining equipment and dies to issue his own five dollar gold piece. When James King of William sent privately struck coins to be assayed, Dunbars were not included. Dunbar soon after sent specimens of his $5 coins to Humbert to be assayed. Humbert refused his request, but a Dunbar $5 later tested by former State Assayer Kohler proved to be worth $5.13. (Ref. Private Gold Coins & Patterns of the United States Donald H. Kagin) This Uncut Dunbar sheet is believed unique in this form. - HKA#66321
