Possibly Unique Off-Metal Cayman Islands Gold Queens Collection, 1977
Possibly Unique Off Metal Cayman Islands Gold Queens Collection. This set consists of (5) $50 coins and (1) $100 coin. These coins were intended to be struck in .500 fine gold. However, these coins in this collection show a white coloured metal with yellow gold plating. It was originally thought that they were struck in white gold and then plated in yellow gold. However, with X-ray Flourescent testing, these coins are base metal, with yellow gold plating. We believe that this was a sales-person's sample or a display sample, struck in base metal and gold plated to look like the coins issued for collectors. It is evident that these coins are die struck and their diameters are the same as the coins struck in gold. Indeed, two of the coins are still sealed in the plastic holders that the Royal Canadian Mint issued them in. The weights are very close. The issued coins weigh 11.34 grams and 22.68 grams, respectively. These examples weigh 11.34 to 11.37 grams, for the $50 size, and 2.80 grams for the $100 size. They all have a proof finish but, due to the passage of time, the gold plating is bubbling and lifting. The catalogue numbers are as KM#21-25 for the $50; KM#13, for the $100. Sold with the case that the coins were originally issued in and a COA. If gold, this set would have contained 1.2761 oz AGW. This set was purchased as gold!
