Presented in this lot is an Antique 18th Century Portuguese Colonial Padauk Wood Writing Desk, circa late 18th century. The top opens to reveal separate compartments for storing writing supplies, one two-section compartment has a lid that when fully opened holds up the solid wood top. African Padauk trees are native to central and tropical west Africa and down to Angola, all areas of former Portuguese colonial expeditions.
This Colonial Padauk Wood Writing Desk features brass fretwork on the top, rear side, and handle escutcheons. Brass accent studs decorate the sides and top. Original lock missing, but fretwork hasp is attached. Wood and brass have deep rich patinas, wear consistent with age and use.
