Portsmouth, Virginia Town Council Medal. Obv: Facade, Centre, Arms below, above, "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat", in ribbon; Rev: "Presented By The Council Of The Town Of Portsmouth Virginia", wreath within; Ae, 64mm, J.UN.29, Freeman 603. The obverse bears the façade of the Portsmouth Naval Hospital as it was. The reverse of the original would have been inscribed with the name of the awardee. These were struck in gold following the Yellow Fever epidemic of 1855. Julian says they were made in 1856 and 1857, and earlier, too. Carlson believed only 60 were struck in copper. Unawarded. EF.
